This book is a genuine treasure chest of Conan lore, following Conan through the ages, through his different careers, as he meets friends and foes and travels across the Hyborian continent. At times the Nemedian Chronicles and other legends differ, but this book will cover most adventures Conan ever found himself in the middle of. And those are not few
Written by none other than Roy Thomas of Marvel fame, expect nothing less than an exciting tale which with art from some of the foremost Conan portrayers ever: Frank Frazetta, Mark Schultz, Gary Gianni, Cary Nord, Ken Kelly, John Buscema, Gregory Manchess, Alex Ross, Barry Windsor-Smith and more. Foreword by longtime Conan fan Todd McFarlane.

Featuring all the favorite Looney Tunes characters, from Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote, this is the first visual history of the groundbreaking animated classics. Gathered from the Warner Bros. archives with illustrations by Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, and Mel Blanc, the film stills, sketches, story boards, and more in the Looney Tunes Ultimate Visual Guide are sure to enthrall cartoon fans both young and old.
Transformers: The Ultimate Guide is an officially licensed guide from DK Publishing published in 2005. written by Simon Furman in 2004. In 2007, a second edition was published, increasing the page count from 144 to 152 (visibly different by having a reflective background on the cover instead of white).
A comprehensive hardcover series from DK Publishing featuring several characters in the Marvel Universe, from mainstays like Spider-Man & Captain America to even Moses Magnum and The Lightmaster. The original volume was released in 2006 with an updated version a few years later in 2009.
Portraits of a Universe was a four-issue mini-series that tied in with Marvel’s line of trading cards. Each issue folded out to show some fourteen scenes from Marvel history, complete with narration. The scenes were chosen not so much for their historical importance as they were for being able to convey a strong image. They include, for instance, Spider-Man versus the Punisher from Amazing Spider-Man #285, or Hobgoblin versus Spider-Man from Spider-Man #6. The scenes were painted by a variety of artists, primarily newcomers, although old favorites like Simon Bisley also appear from time to time.
With art that looks like a hybrid of Norman Rockwell and Jack Kirby, artist Ross has become the preeminent painter of superheroes of his generation. This lavish coffee- table tribute puts him into a pantheon as exalted as the superbeings he depicts. The son of a preacher and an illustrator, Ross was always captivated by superheroes, but it wasn't until he discovered the use of live models in art school that he was able to realize his visions of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the rest. Like Rockwell, Ross uses photographs to set up lighting and staging-a process documented in a section at the end of the book-and like Rockwell, he favors otherworldly lighting effects that somehow serve to make his figures more realistic. Like Kirby, he has an innate belief in the iconic power of superheroes that gives them a dimension far beyond the usual four-colored adventures. Whether in Kingdom Come, a renowned tale of the twilight of the superheroes; his own oversized stories written with Paul Dini; or countless posters, covers and commissions, Ross's vision of beings so powerful they verge on arrogant will make viewers glad they don't exist in the real world. Kidd's text is laudatory but never cloying, and the book includes numerous studies, sketches and photos to show Ross's method. While collectors and fans gush over Ross's output, the sheer weight of pictures of every superteam in DC's universe does become somewhat numbing by the end. Still, the immense power of Ross's best images cuts through any clutter, and this volume deftly showcases just that.
Michael Eury, the writer/editor of the critically acclaimed The Krypton Companion, and Michael Kronenberg, the designer of the eye-popping Spies, Vixens, and Masters of Kung Fu: The Art of Paul Gulacy, team up to explore the Silver and Bronze Ages of Batman comic books in The Batcave Companion! Two distinct sections of this book examine the Dark Knight’s progression from his campy “New Look” of the mid-1960s to his “creature of the night” reinvention of the 1970s. Features include issue-by-issue indexes, interviews with CARMINE INFANTINO, JOE GIELLA, DENNIS O’NEIL, and NEAL ADAMS, and guest essays by MIKE W. BARR and WILL MURRAY. Contributors include SHELDON MOLDOFF, LEN WEIN, STEVE ENGLEHART, and TERRY AUSTIN, with a special tribute to the late MARSHALL ROGERS. With its incisive introduction by Dennis O’Neil and its iconic cover painting by Neal Adams, The Batcave Companion is a must-have for every comics fan!
If you're already well versed in Bat-trivia, you probably won't find The Ultimate Guide to the Dark Knight anywhere near ultimate enough. But as a broad history of Batman's friends, foes, and high-tech hardware and hideouts, this oversized, illustration-filled DK guide just can't be beat. Just as DK did with the people and paraphernalia of Star Wars in Star Wars: Episode I: Incredible Cross-Sections and Star Wars: Episode I: Visual Dictionary, this guide pulls apart and pokes at the many gadgets and backdrops found in the Dark Knight's world. Exploded diagrams reveal the innards of the new and old Batcaves, and stat-packed tags and captions spell out everything from how the Bat-Signal works to where Catwoman stashes her bullwhip. Batman scholar Scott Beatty has compiled hundreds of excellent panels and covers from the original comic, and he displays commanding knowledge cataloging Gotham's most colorful characters in big, splashy spreads. (And no doubt future historians will appreciate his capsulized, 1939-on Batman timeline as an uncanny window into American pop consciousness. ) Die-hard fans will find much lacking here, though, like the near-omission of Frank Miller's genius Dark Knight Returns series and not even a passing reference to Batman's poignant love-hate relationship with the Man of Steel. But what DK's Ultimate Guide does, it does well--examining neat Bat-minutiae and providing a primer on the post-no-man's-land comic continuity.
This copiously illustrated encyclopedia chronicles more than 1,000 DC Comics characters from the 1930s to the present. Arranged alphabetically, each entry gives the first appearance, status (hero, villain, etc.), real name, occupation, height, weight, and eye and hair color of the superheroes or supervillains. Special abilities and superpowers are also listed along with ample cross-references to other comic characters or superleague affiliations, such as the L.E.G.I.O.N. cosmic peacekeeping force.
The biographical entries make fascinating reading in alternative history. For example, the Crimson Avenger served in a league called the Seven Soldiers of Victory during World War II. Afterward, he was sent backward in time. He came forward in time and discovered that he was struck with a terminal disease. After his death, an unknown woman purchased two guns that had belonged to him. These guns transformed her into Crimson Avenger II, who became an agent of vengeance and execution. Of course, famous characters such as Wonder Woman or Batman are included. But lesser-known characters, such as Superman's college flame, Lori Lemaris (a mermaid), are also listed.
Culled from the archives of DC Comics, Wonder Woman: The Ultimate Guide to the Amazon Princess details the amazing exploits, incredible adversaries, and magical weapons of the greatest comic book heroine. Packed with original comic book images and a timeline charting Wonder Woman's entire career, this comprehensive illustrated treatment will delight fans of all ages-and win over many new ones.
The complete edition of Superman: The Ultimate Guide to the Man of Steel is a comprehensive history of the world's most iconic super hero. Trace KAL-EL'S origins, explore maps of Smallville and Metropolis, and become the authority on Superman's friends, enemies and heroic exploits. And, don't miss the timeline of Superman comics, from his 1938 Action Comics debut to his latest sensation in Infinite Crisis.
Grade 5 Up-Batman and Superman may already be the subjects of "Ultimate Guides," but their inclusion here won't stop this wonderfully inviting volume from flying off the shelf faster than a speeding bullet. It chronicles the JLA, a superheroic team that has included Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and many others throughout its colorful past. Readers with an appetite for trivia will find plenty to chew on here, whether it's Plastic Man's real name (Eel O'Brian), Wonder Woman's first appearance (1941), or the color of Aquaman's eyes (sea blue, of course). With over 40 years of outrageous story lines and hundreds of episodes to cover, Beatty does a commendable job of transforming a tremendous amount of information into a cohesive work. Created in the signature DK style, the text appears in bold spreads, each with an introduction, several items of note, and plenty of dramatic, colorful images, including some that were specially commissioned for this publication. The book opens with a "biographical" chapter on the JLA's current members, followed by sections on their allies, enemies, and legacy. The inclusion of an encyclopedic time line of important events will please longtime fans. With interest in comic books and recent film and television spin-offs at a high, expect a demand of heroic proportions.
What kind of equipment does Catwoman carry? Where did the Transformers come from? How did Catwoman become who she is? These two oversize, illustration-rich books, on slick paper typical of DK, have all the answers, allowing new readers to come into an established comic character's world without wondering what they have missed. They are also a great way for fans to revisit or understand more about a character's background. In Catwoman the art is lush and varied, covering nearly 65 years of history. transformers uses art to great effect to provide "technical" specs of the robots that readers know and love or want to learn about.

Famous featured DC Comics artists include Jim Lee, Alex Ross, Adam Hughes, J. Scott Campbell, Michael Turner, Tim Sale, and Jill Thompson. Although this Vertigo Encyclopedia wasn't published by Vertigo, it blows the original one out of the water, not just because the original was made around the birth of the Vertigo imprint to detail the characters that switched over and this one deals with the life of it. But also because this one goes into great depth into the volumes Vertigo has released rather then just the characters, like others comic encyclopedias are known to do. But just because Vertigo didn't publish this doesn't mean it wasn't worked on by some of their greats, both Neil Gaiman (writer of Vertigo's The Sandman) and Karen Berger (the Executive Editor at Vertigo) provide forewords and still others helped with the content.
The Vertigo Encyclopedia (2008) (c2c) (bZc-DCP)

Written by long-time Marvel freelancers and former staffers Roy Thomas and Peter Sanderson, The Marvel Vault is a wonderful trip down memory lane for those of us who were made to feel like part of the Marvel Bullpen at the time, as well as an excellent overview for those who haven’t captured and retained the history like the hivemind that comics fandom is.
Two scans of this book was available; older bZc's and newer ArtNet's.
Providing a wealth of information about the history of the ground-breaking comic, plus fascinating facts about key storylines and all the major characters‹good and bad‹that have thrilled fans since the comic's creation, Fantastic Four: The Ultimate Guide is an invaluable addition to any fans collection.
Unless Peter Parker decides to pen his own autobiography someday, you're not going to find a better guide than this to the life and times of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. From that fateful radioactive bite in the science hall up to Spidey 2099, DK's Ultimate Guide recounts all the career milestones--major and minor--of Stan Lee's web-slinging wall-crawler. Organized and authored by Tom DeFalco, former Marvel editor in chief and the series' bestselling author, this guide pulls together the storyline's many twists and turns (chronologically, by decade) and devotes big spreads to nearly every noteworthy ally, friend, and villain (with one curious omission in the Shocker). Special sections cover episodes like the alien costume, the regrettable clone saga, and the wedding to Mary Jane, while panel after panel of original art (over 600 images in all) flesh out the action (a particular treat with the corny old dialogue and art).
DeFalco makes some small missteps--inevitable in any fan-boy project--and certainly The Ultimate Guide will feel dated as the series evolves, but as a comprehensive guide, it just doesn't get any better. Throw in a foreword by the inimitable Stan Lee, and you've got a book that would make even Peter Parker proud.
An in-depth look at one of Marvel Comics’ most enigmatic characters, the fiery agent of vengeance known as Ghost Rider. Special features on the writers and artists who have worked on Ghost Rider provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the comic, and don’t miss a sneak peek at movie stills from the upcoming film!
Welcome to the nightmarish world of Dr. Bruce Banner, the Incredible Hulk!

Hulk: The Incredible Guide captures the full legend of this Marvel Comics superhero, who has been thrilling fans for more than 40 years. Discover the secret of the Hulk’s superhuman powers, and of the weird multiple personalities lurking within Bruce Banner’s fractured psyche!
Written by comic book critic, historian and lecturer Peter Sanderson, X-Men: The Ultimate Guide gives you the entire history of the X-Men, from the comic book’s inception in 1963 until present (my version of the book ends at 2003, but there are versions out there that delve further into the 2000s). It features a Foreword by Stan Lee in which the comic book icon reveals how he came to invent the series that has lasted four decades, which characters are his favorites and why he chose the title “X-Men” over his original concept title “The Mutants”. The rest of the book gives you insight as to the writers, inkers, artists who worked on the series as well as the spin-off spawned by X-Men and the transformations the X-Men comic book series has taken over the years.
AVENGERS ASSEMBLE! As soon as this spellbinding cry rings out, the world's mightiest hero team gather together, ready to confront and defeat any super-menace threatening the planet. Though the Avengers' roster is constantly changing, the founding members consisted of the mighty Thor, the invincible Iron Man, the astonishing Ant-Man, the wondrous Wasp, and the incredible Hulk. Other heroic luminaries have included Black Panther, Vision, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Yellow Jacket, She-Hulk, and Quicksilver. The team's current leader is none other than Captain America, one of the most famous heroes of them all.
Origins of Marvel Comicsis the first of Marvel's collections of Silver Age reprints. Originally published by Simon and Schuster in the early 1970s, Originsset the stage for the Marvel mythos. Finally reprinted in 1997, this new paperback edition features the seminal stories of Marvel's Superheros. Kirby's "Hulk" #1 is here, as is "Amazing Fantasy" #15 (the first appearance of Spider-Man, drawn by Ditko), "Journey into Mystery" #83 , Doctor Strange's origin story (Strange Tales #) and of course "Fantastic Four" #1.
Each Silver Age story has a companion story from late 80s to show the development of the characters. The Lee/Kirby Hulk origin story is joined by "Hulk" #372, a story by the great team of Peter David/Dale Keown. Fans of the Origins may recall that the original edition featured another Silver Age comic (in the Hulk's case, it was issue #118--a classic story pitting Hulk versus Sub-Mariner, written by Lee and drawn by Herb Trimpe). Although the loss of the other Silver Age pieces is regrettable, in this case, the Hulk's character shows considerable development in 1990 from his origin in 1962. This holds true for other comics featured in the book, especially the coupling of the first issue of the Fantastic Four with a 1990's FF by John Byrne. Companion pieces include FF #232, an unspecified (but Simonsonized) Thor of consecutive splash pages, a terrible Iron Man #231 drawn by Layton, and McFarlane's Spider-Man #1.
Overall, I give this book a nine out of ten for overall ment and worth. Young fans may find in this collection of gems a reconfirmation of the fun of these classic characters[/quote]
Another of the groundbreaking collected editions of Marvel Comics stories. This was actually published in the mid-1970s, so pretty amazing for the time.
This included the origin of the X-Men, so got me started on knowing about them, as well as Daredevil, Iron Man and other heroes, again with information and stories from Stan Lee.
According to Marvel: "After 20 years, a new volume is added to Marvel's classic ORIGINS series! The beginning of some of Marvel's most stalwart heroes are here, recounted in all their original four-color glory! In the shadow of WWII, the star-spangled avenger known as Captain America is born! Namor, the savage Sub-Mariner, makes his historic first appearance in the surface world! War hero Colonel Nick Fury is drafted into the ultimate spy agency, S.H.I.E.L.D. Lord Kevin Plunder, a British noble, is abandoned as a child in the prehistoric Savage Land and assumes the mantle of Ka-Zar! The early years of Professor X, mentor of the X-Men, are laid bare! Featuring the titanic talents of Stan Lee, John Buscema, John Byrne, Roger Stern, John Romita, Jr., Scott Lobdell, Chris Claremont, Roy Thomas, Jim Steranko, and Jack Kirby!
The super heroes in the Marvel universe were designed with significant flaws, which makes them all the more appealing. Despite their great physical prowess, there were many times when their runaway emotional state rendered them incapable of functioning as a hero. However, their powers are overwhelming in the sense that they cannot be denied and so they are routinely forced back into the super hero business.
Four of the greatest and most flawed of the Marvel heroes are profiled in this book. They are:
*) Captain America
*) Spider Man
*) The Hulk
*) Wolverine
To the extent that it has been revealed in the magazines, the origin of their powers and their life to the point of receiving those powers is summarized. Emphasis is also placed on their weaknesses and how the interaction between those flaws and the environment of their personal life affects them. All of us are beset by personal doubts and seeing such doubts in people with mighty powers helps us to better cope with our personal problems. This is an excellent book about these four Marvel heroes and is a bit of therapy for the troubles in our lives.
In 1932 a 22-year old named Martin Goodman opened the publishing house which would come to be known as Marvel. Westerns and detective stories were the big sellers of the day. The spider-man character was a shot in the dark feature in a poor-selling comic book Amazing Fantasy that was about to get the axe. Today an original copy of that comic would cost in the range of $40,000.
With a library containing over 4,700 proprietary characters and eleven movies featuring Marvel characters already underway for the next two years, the Marvel Universe has become as epic as its storylines.
This oversized collector's style guide, Marvel: The Characters and Their Universe, covers the history of the national obsession, the marvel influence on media, and the best loved characters including the Incredible Hulk and X-Men, and ends with a look at new worlds to conquer. Full of stunning 4-color photographs, movie stills, original comic art, and animation drawings, this is a vibrant and colorful tribute to the incredible cultural phenomenon.
