Product Description
The only authoritative reference source on the propagator concept, now thoroughly revised and updated
Much has changed in the study of quantum and theoretical chemistry since the publication of the first edition of Propagators in Quantum Chemistry. Advances in computer power and software packages now make it possible to calculate molecular structure, properties, spectra, and reactivity with greater predictive power. Chemical processes, especially under conditions not readily available in the laboratory, can also be much more easily studied via theory and computations.
In this environment, the concept of propagators (or Green's functions) is emerging as an increasingly useful tool in the study of atomic and molecular processes. Propagators in Quantum Chemistry, Second Edition presents the theory and basic approximations of propagators in a unified manner as it provides:
A thorough introduction to propagators, and how they can be used to study atomic and molecular properties and spectra
Updated examples and technical details of the use of the propagator concept in various common approximate treatments
Problems that provide the opportunity to work out further details and applications of the theory
Propagators, which are still gaining acceptance as tools in theoretical chemistry, have a long-demonstrated power and success in a number of areas including condensed matter physics. Propagators in Quantum Chemistry clearly describes the unprecedented utility and value of propagators, and explores how and why they are becoming increasingly important to scientists and researchers across the scientific spectrum.

Tropical Rainforest Responses to Climatic Change (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences)
Product Details
Hardcover: 428 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (November 14, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 3540239081
ISBN-13: 978-3540239086
Product Description
The goal of this book is to provide a current overview of the impacts of climate change on tropical forests, to investigate past, present, and future climatic influences on the ecosystems with the highest biodiversity on the planet.
Tropical Rainforest Responses to Climatic Change will be the first book to examine how tropical rain forest ecology is altered by climate change, rather than simply seeing how plant communities were altered. Shifting the emphasis onto ecological processes e.g. how diversity is structured by climate and the subsequent impact on tropical forest ecology, provides the reader with a more comprehensive coverage. A major theme of this book that emerges progressively is the interaction between humans, climate and forest ecology. While numerous books have appeared dealing with forest fragmentation and conservation, none have explicitly explored the long term occupation of tropical systems, the influence of fire and the future climatic effects of deforestation, coupled with anthropogenic emissions. Incorporating modelling of past and future systems paves the way for a discussion of conservation from a climatic perspective, rather than the usual plea to stop logging.

Review
"The authors of this volume have taken a step forward by systematically describing the characteristics of the vector-organism relationship." ASM News, Fred Rosenberg
Product Description
Several billion people are at daily risk of life-threatening vector-borne diseases such as malaria, trypanosomiasis and dengue. This volume describes the way in which the causal pathogens of such diseases interact with the vectors that transmit them, detailing the biological adaptations that enable pathogens to live with their vectors and, in some circumstances, to control them. This knowledge has led to novel preventative strategies in the form of antibiotics and new vaccines which are targeted not at the pathogen itself but at its specific vector.

Understanding phytochemical gene interactions provides the basis for individualized therapies to promote health as well as prevent and treat disease. The authors of Phytochemicals: Nutrient Gene Interactions examine the interactions between phytochemicals and the human genome and discuss the impact these interactions have on health, aging, and chronic conditions such as inflammation, heart disease, obesity, type II diabetes mellitus, and cancer.
Keeping pace with the most important trends in phytochemical research, the authors accentuate the latest understanding on the use of controlled clinical trials, new screening technologies, and the completed human genome project for researching the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of phytochemicals. The book covers a balanced range of topics beginning with experimental strategies and methodologies for identifying significant interactions between diet, genetic variants, and different markers of cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and obesity. Different authors explain the mechanisms of protective action that link diets rich in omega-3 fatty acids, unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains with a decreased risk of chronic and degenerative diseases. They also review and summarize epidemiological research on plant-based foods and dietary patterns supporting the beneficial role of phytochemicals in health promotion and disease prevention.

Phospholipid Metabolism in Apoptosis (Subcellular Biochemistry, Volume 36)
Product Details
Hardcover: 356 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1st edition (May 31, 2002)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0306467828
ISBN-13: 978-0306467820
Product Description
The last few years have witnessed an explosion of both interest and knowledge about apoptosis, the process by which a cell actively commits suicide. It is now well recognised that apoptosis is essential in many aspects of normal development and is required for maintaining tissue homeostasis. The molecular mechanisms of apoptosis are presently unknown and the subject of focused research effort. It is clear that cell membrane structure and properties play an early part in the induction process. There is increasing evidence that the arrangement of polar lipids in the membrane lipid matrix is an important factor coupled with the homeostatic mechanisms responsible for preserving membrane lipid composition and asymmetry. Changes in membrane permeability are also likely to be involved, possibly as a direct consequence of disturbances in the lipid bilayer matrix.
The purpose of this volume is to examine the involvement of membrane lipids in early events of apoptosis. In particular, the role of phospholipids in mitochondrial permeability, membrane lipid asymmetry, and sphingolipid and phospholipid signalling processes in early apoptotic events are reviewed by current researchers in these fields.

From Publishers Weekly
Originally published in France, This's book documents the sensory phenomena of eating and uses basic physics to put to bed many culinary myths. In each short chapter This presents a piece of debatable conventional wisdom-such as whether it is better to make a stock by placing meat in already boiling water, or water before it is boiled-and gives its history, often quoting famous French chefs, before making scientific pronouncements. In the chapter on al dente pasta, for instance, This discusses pasta-making experiments, the science behind cooking it and whether it is better to use oil or butter to prevent it from sticking. Most of the discussions revolve around common practices and phenomenon-chilling wine, why spices are spicy, how to best cool a hot drink-but more than a few are either irrelevant or Franco-specific (such as the chapters on quenelles and preparing fondue). This's experimentation, however, is not for the mildly curious, but readers unafraid to, say, microwave mayonnaise will find many ideas here.

Vegetation-Climate Interaction: How Vegetation Makes the Global Environment (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences)
Product Details
Hardcover: 232 pages
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (June 11, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 3540324917
ISBN-13: 978-3540324911
Product Description
This book offers a readable and accessible account of the way in which the world's plant life partly controls its own environment. Starting from the broad patterns in vegetation which have classically been seen as a passive response to climate, the authors build up from the local scale - with microclimates produced by plants - to the regional and global scale. The influence of plants (both on land and in the ocean) in making clouds, haze and rain are considered, along with plant effects on the composition of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere. Broad global feedbacks that either stabilize or destabilize the earth's environment will be explored, in the context of environmental change in the recent geological past, and in the near future. Common contentions and misconceptions about the role of vegetation or forest removal in the spread of deserts will also be considered.

AIDS Epidemiology: A Quantitative Approach
Product Details
Paperback: 376 pages
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA (January 6, 1994)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0195076419
ISBN-13: 978-0195076417
Product Description
AIDS has appeared in more than 130 countries, and over 100,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the U.S. alone. More and more, the public will be depending on statisticians to provide answers about the future course of this epidemic.
This comprehensive work confronts the problems that are unique to AIDS research and unites them under a single conceptual framework. It focuses on methods for the design and analysis of epidemiologic studies, the natural history of AIDS and the transmission of HIV, methods for tracking and projecting the course of the epidemic, and statistical issues in therapeutic trials. The various methods of monitoring and forecasting this disease receive comprehensive treatment. These methods include back-calculation, which the authors developed; interpretation of survey data on HIV prevalence; mathematical models for HIV transmission; and approaches that combine different types of epidemiological data. Much of this material -- such as a discussion of methods for assessing safety of the blood supply, an evaluation of survey approaches, and methods to project pediatric AIDS incidence -- is not available in any other work.
